Tazewell County Genealogical & Historical Society has copied the original returned 1869-1950 marriage licenses which were in long-term storage at the Tazewell County courthouse.  We would like to thank the Tazewell County Clerk’s office for allowing us to access these historical documents!

Prior to 1869, marriage records were simply a one-line entry in a records book.  Starting in 1869, marriage records began to be transitioned to certificates.  Be aware the 1869 marriages still entered in a records book rather than a certificate are not in our collection or the index discussed below.

Prior to 1878, marriage licenses contained the names of the groom and bride, date of marriage, and the name of the presiding official.

Starting around 1878, marriage licenses began containing additional information such as the groom's and bride's full names, places of residence, ages, birthplaces, father's name, mother's maiden name, and number of marriages.  Other items included are the groom's occupation, the location & date of marriage, witnesses, and the presiding official.

Indexes to the 1898-1938 marriage licenses have been published in four printed volumes.  They can be consulted at our library or can be purchased.

Indexes to the 1939-1950 marriage licenses were later published in two printed volumes.  They can also be consulted at our library or can be purchased.

TCGHS members may search the online index below.  Here are some tips on how to do searches.

Copies of a license may be ordered at the Society's library, through the mail, or online using our shopping cart.  Your copies may be picked up at the library or will be emailed/mailed to you at no extra charge.

Please supply the groom’s name, bride’s name, date of marriage, and delivery mode for each license you want copied.  Your order must be paid before we will create the copies.

Each copy is $5.00.  Copies ordered online will be $5.45 (to offset the fees we are charged by the credit card payment processor).  Credit cards are not accepted for mailed orders.

Some of the licenses have extra papers dealing with the marriage – usually permission for underage children to marry signed by the parents or guardians. Copies of these additional papers will be included with the license at no additional charge.

Note: Due to county & state restrictions, TCGHS is unable to obtain certified copies for you or copies of records less than 20 years old. You must apply for those records directly from the Tazewell County Clerk's office.
